If you’re searching for inspiration for your dream vacation, see which trips upscale travelers are putting on their bucket lists.

The newest results from the annual Virtuoso Life Travel Dreams Survey are in. More than 5,800 travelers from 60 countries shared their desired destinations, travel interests, and dream vacations.

Top Trips of a Lifetime

5. Australia Experiences
Australia is the fastest growing destination for luxury travelers, according to Virtuoso sales data. The rest of the top 10: Italy’s Amalfi Coast, Ireland’s castles and countryside, a month in Provence, a Galápagos Islands expedition and a stay in a Tahitian overwater bungalow.

4. Exploring the Greek Isles
Travel to Greece is up 41 percent, with 58 percent of Virtuoso client bookings happening from June through August as travelers head to their favorite isles: Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, and Rhodes.

Travel with three (or even more!) generations is a trend whose popularity seems eternal.

Cruising is hot this year, as second place in the Trips of a Lifetime category goes to a world cruise. This was last year’s top pick.

1. European River/Canal Cruise
A cruise experience along Europe’s waterways is selected as this year’s top Trip of a Lifetime. It’s also the top trend in this year’s Virtuoso Luxe Report.

Top Dream Vacation Destinations

5. Greece
Greece cracked this year’s top five Dream Destinations. The rest of the Top 10: Ireland, the Caribbean, Fiji, England, and Antarctica.

4. France
Always a favorite, France came in at #4 this year, the same place it occupied on last year’s survey of places for a dream vacation.

3. New Zealand
Travelers named New Zealand their third most popular dream vacation destination. It maintained its standing from last year’s survey.

2. Italy
Italy was the second most-named dream vacation destination by Travel Dreams survey respondents. It held the same spot in last year’s poll.

1. Australia
Australia takes the top spot in the survey of dream vacation destinations – the same place it occupied in last year’s survey as well.

Travelers have a wide range of interests they enjoy indulging on a dream vacation. They also enjoy a variety of travel styles. Here are this year’s favorite types of travel:

Number of Trips Virtuoso Travelers Expect to Take

Luxury travelers are an on-the move group as they pursue their bucket lists of dream destinations:

  • 59% will take 1-3 trips this year
  • 29% will take 4-6 trips this year
  • 12% will take 7 or more trips this year

New This Year: Why I Travel

For the first time, this year’s Travel Dreams Survey featured an essay contest. Luxury travelers submitted the varied reasons they’re so passionate about travel.

Winner Daryl Bart of Wynantskill, New York earned $10,000 for her piece on how travel benefits her family. “Travel is stepping outside the box that has been neatly provided for us,” she writes.

Second place (and $5,000) went to Eileen Dormer of Upper Montclair, New Jersey. She wrote about the rejuvenating power of travel: “I travel because travel vaporizes world-weariness. Poof! I am young again, and everything is luminous and fresh.”
